Antiquities and Antiques, Pre-1900

This gallery is intended to be a catch-point for antiquities and antiques of frame-able size.  I personally find it satisfying to find rare, small, relatively inexpensive pieces and to be able to frame them is a manner to both give them due protection and excellent presentation.  In reality they are not, or possibly better said, were not rarities or sought after collectibles at their time... it has only been with the passage of time that history has given them stature and rarity, as other like pieces vanished.  They are absolutely not originals - in the sense of being the one and only - they are, as we have said, "rare" and very hard to find.  Please feel free to enjoy these pieces and to contact us regarding their availability.

Civil War Era Tintype #1

Set of 3 Civil War Era tintype photographs

These are originals tintype photographs from an era beginning around 1855. The plates -used to record photographic images - were produced under two different names "Melainotypes" (melaino meaning dark or black) and Ferrotypes (ferro, of course meaning iron-related). By the 1860's inexpensive photographic plates were available  on thin sheets of iron, and they became known as "tintypes".  Tin was never an ingredient found in "tintype" plates.  Tintype photography became very popular during the American Civil War era. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers - and their families - sent images to their loved ones on these light, unbreakable plates.

All three plates offered here as a set are framed in Larson-Juhl Ferrosa II "bronze" wood moulding.  The tintype is "floated" off the mounting board to enable the viewer to see the entire plate, There is a double window with a white inner mat and a cream colored outer mat. The dimensions of  this framed tintype is 7 11/16" wide by 8 3/4" high by 7/8" deep.

His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale (1802) and The Hay Wain painted in 1821. 1880 Martha Washington Print

"Martha Washington" print by H. Hallett & Co. (1880)

Original Chromolithographic print printed in 1880

Image dimensions ~9" wide by 15 1/4" high

The H. Hallett & Company of Portland, Maine was a prominent publisher of the era.  This print and every other print that we have seen of either George or Martha Washington has a strong greenish cast.  The print itself is in good condition... museum-grade moss green matboard by Crescent has been added to the frame under the lip to separate the print from the glass.  The print is in a very old frame and is covered with antique glass (wavy with some small bubbles). This print and frame is very old and would be an excellent addition to a setting where originality is desirable.

The frame is dark wood... the overall dimensions are ~12⅝" wide by 16¾" high by 1" deep

(I apologize for the reflections in the glass, this is a very much nicer print than the image would indicate - Robert)

1924 Ludlow PA Wildcats

"1924 Ludlow PA Wildcats"  photographer unknown

Original sepia photograph of the 1924 Ludlow, PA Wildcats mounted on board and "framed" in era paperboard frame. The image is dated 1924 in the lower left quadrant.

Image dimensions ~6½ wide and 4½" high

This image and another (dated 1908) of the same team have had an interesting journey to their current state. This picture and several others - some shown below - came into my possession when an older gentleman that I knew died and his family came to where he had lived and threw away all of his possessions - I was deeply saddened by their actions and I retrieved a number of items from the dumpster so that the memories might live on.  Several years later Bruce Caudill - a photographer with this gallery - and I reproduced this picture and the one for 1908 and sent them to the current coach of the Ludlow PA Wildcats. The photographs were run in local newspapers through the valley in an attempt to identify the players. Since that time the quest has taken many interesting turns... including information brought to us by the owner of The Arlington Resort in Hot Springs, AR suggesting that this team trained at or near the Resort.  Articles that this gentleman had in his possession that linked him to The Arlington have been returned to the resort for display in their archives.
