Featured Artist

   The Gallery is very pleased to add Rebecca Graves to our list of featured artists with whom we have a close association.  It wasn't until few days ago that I connected Becky to my choice as "best of show" during a recent month-long exhibition at the Springfield Museum of Art.  That piece - Broken Hearts/ Shattered Dreams - is a wonderful and moving work of fine art. At the time I made a mental note to locate the artist, but as I have gotten older I've noticed that the mental noted don't stick around as well as the written ones.  But in spite of myself, recent events have brought us together and provided each of us with an opportunity to share Becky's work with you.

   Rebecca Graves is a regional native... she was born in Dayton... graduated from high school in Richmond (Indiana) and has lived in the Springfield area since 1977.  One of he most intriguing aspects to Becky's art is that Becky is pursuing a double major at Wittenberg University (here in Springfield) in Fine Arts and... Psychology... and even though I see these as huge opposites, I know (having spent some time in the alcohol-drug abuse-mental health fields in a prior life) that Becky has connected the dots and that these interests merge in the quality and depth of her art.  Sorry for the divergence... we were talking about Becky's background and not mine... Becky began painting in oils at age 14... her goal was to create a 3-dimensional experience on a 2-dimensional canvas.  And, apparently she was very successful... her talent was easily recognizable and she had sold several painting and had commissions for other works before having completed high school.  In actuality, Becky began her college experience in 1976, but to a continuous battle with illnesses was forced to drop out well before she could earn her degree.  Becky's illnesses continued off and on for the next thirty years and, at times, forced her to give up artistic aspirations. During these times Becky ran a decorative art business, married and raised two children.  With renewed health and her two children off to college, Becky returned to Wittenberg.  Her return to the university re-ignited her art, giving her new skills and leading her to the artistic styles she now expresses in her paintings.  In the following display of her works, you, the viewer will experience her Warhol-like presentation of common everyday items and her Escher-like knack for reflection.

One final note... Becky has at least two shows planned for the first seven months of 2008... some of these works are planned for the shows... thus the buyer may need to wait until the completion of the show to take possession of the purchased painting.
