As of this writing Michael is relatively new to the Steele Pointe Gallery. He came to our
attention by way of his sister who lives in Springfield and utilizes the
gallery's services. To our benefit,
Michael visits Springfield multiple times each year.
My first impression of Michael was one of both interest and curiosity. There was little doubt that Michael was knowledgeable and skilled in his personal niche style of photography. Not like most of the gallery's photographers, Michael is not a high tech kind of guy, most of his equipment has been around for a lot of years. And, I would not have been surprised to find an Instamatic hidden in the pocket of his jeans.
What makes Michael's photography especially interesting and unique is his uncanny ability imagine new and different ways manipulate his film-based outcomes.
Like many things in life, Michael photography is an acquired taste... either you like it a lot, or, you hate it with a passion. That's the way it is !
Originally, I set out to create an introduction with a bit of me and my
impressions of Michael and a bit of Michael from a Bio as asked him to create...
that didn't work. Nothing every comes that easy.
Like several of our artists who reside at, attend or work within a university
setting, they take their biographic profiles pretty damn seriously. Michael is
not the exception. So, as with the several others, I am going to provide
you with
a link which will take you to a separate page where I
have re-typed Michael's artist statement in his own words. Any typos are
undoubtedly mine!
[Michael Howell Artist Statement]
If we are of like mind, I think you'll find Michael's work interesting and deep... there's considerably more there than first meets the eye. Capturing the image is only the beginning, enhancing the meaning happens during processing.
If you are so moved, email us with your impressions, Michael and I would be interested in your thoughts.
Michael lives and works in San Antonio, Texas
We haven't yet decided how we want to market these photographs to our audience... what sizes, what prices? If you are currently interested and/or curious, let us know... it will probably get us moving faster.
