Immersed in historical significance, the Louvre is probably the world's most recognizable museums of Art. I've borrowed the following history of the Louvre from the museum's website to share with you...
"The Palais du Louvre, which houses one of the most stunning collections of artworks in the world, is known first and foremost as a museum. Yet for almost seven hundred years the buildings constituted the principal residences of the kings and emperors of France."
"Built shortly after 1190 A.D. by King Philippe Auguste as a defense fortress, by the fourteenth century the Palais du Louvre had become a pleasant residence that occasionally served as a royal home. Francis I chose to turn it into a Renaissance "palace". Over time, a royal estate gradually developed. Henry IV ordered the cháteau built by Catherine de Médicis in the Tuileries to be linked to the Louvre palace by a "grand gallery" bordering the Seine. Louis XIV, who resided at the Louvre until his departure to Versailles in 1678, completed the Cour Carrée (Square Court), which was closed off on the city side by a colonnade. When the court moved to Versailles, French monarchs lost interest in the Palais du Louvre."
"In 1793, the Louvre became a museum, and has been given over ever since to the conservation and preservation of thousands of artworks and legacies of past civilizations. In the early 19th century, sovereigns transformed the interiors but carried out little building work. But from the mid-19th century onward, the Louvre underwent the largest phase of extension in its history. Napoleon III completed the unification of the Palais des Tuileries and the Palais du Louvre by building the Aile Denon (Denon Wing) on the Seine side and finishing the Aile Richelieu on the rue de Rivoli side. In 1871, the Palais des Tuileries burned down. Thenceforth, the Louvre opened on the great perspective facing western Paris."
"The Grand Louvre project, launched by President Mitterand in 1981, modernized the museum and extended it, with the opening in 1993 of the Richelieu wing, which formerly housed the Ministry of Finance."
I've shared this short history with you to give you a perspective for the period of time that the Louvre - in one fashion or another - has been a collection point for some of the world's greatest works of art. The gallery presented on this website is about the printing of "new originals" from copper engraved plates... which have been stored in the vaults of the Louvre for centuries. Through special arrangements with the Louvre these plates are being categorized and made available (by the Master Engravers of the Louvre) to create, new, original prints. The plates, current available to our customers, date from 1662 to 2002 and number nearly 600... some are by the original artists and others are "apres" (after) the works of the original artist. Our experience with engravings has been that the original engraved plates were either created by the artist (who was either a printmaker (his chosen art form) or an artists who also possessed engraving skills); an engraver who worked closely with the original artist to capture his paintings in an engraved form (such as John Constable (painter) and David Lucas (engraver)); or, an engraver who created the engraved plates separate of the artist, and quite possibly, many years after the artist's death.
If you are interested in a print, it MUST be ordered through the Steele Pointe Art Gallery. The normal turnaround time from the order to the arrival of the print is 6-8 weeks... the print is not pressed at the Louvre until the order has been made. Each print will come with the embossed seal of the Master Engravers of the Louvre. Prints custom framed by the gallery - along with the purchase of the print - will receive free shipping and handling from the Louvre in Paris to the Gallery and free in-house labor for the framing.
The current categories include... Views of Paris... Chateaus and Monuments... Versailles... Festivals and Ceremonies... Coronations... Pastoral Scenes... Hunt Scenes... Animals... Botanicals... Drawings and Studies... Genres... Landscapes... Seascapes-Marine... Portraits... Nudes... Sepias... Mythology... Decorative... Architectural... Napoleon's Trip to Egypt... and Moderns. The price range is between a hundred and a couple thousand dollars. Contact the Gallery for exact pricing... there may be variations to the shown price due to the fluctuating monetary exchange rates.
